# Categories

Use **Categories** to group the [products](https://docs.vivlab.com/en/sections/products.md) in your catalog. A category can contain smaller groups called subcategories, such as **Clothing → T-shirts**. Here you can create those groups, change their names or images, change their order, or disable a category you no longer need.

Expand the list to see categories and the subcategories inside them. Each entry, called a node, represents one category. Click its name to edit its settings, or **Add a sub-category** to create a group inside it.

The first node of the tree stands for the page listing your categories on the store (named **Boutique** by default). Opening it lets you edit the title, description and image of that page; your root categories appear as its subcategories. This node cannot be disabled or deleted.

The dashboard is shown in French, with English captions.

## Create a category

Click **Create a category** to add a new category at the root. To create a subcategory attached to an existing parent, use **Add a sub-category** directly on the relevant row.

## Reorder

The display order on your store is set by drag and drop: open the parent category and reorder its children in the **Subcategories** block. For root categories, go through the first node of the tree. This order determines how visitors discover your catalog in the menu and category lists.

## Category settings

Clicking on a category opens the edit form (titled **Category** for a root category, **Subcategory** for a nested one). The **View page** button opens the matching public page in a new tab, handy for quickly checking how it looks for visitors.

### Content

The **Category name** is used as the page title and in the URL. The **Category description** introduces the category to your visitors; give it some care since it's also used for the SEO of the page.

### Image

Add an image to illustrate the page and make it more attractive in menus and lists.

### Settings

The **Category status** block lets you toggle the category between active and disabled. A disabled category no longer appears on your store or in navigation, without being deleted.

The **Parent category** field lets you attach the category under another existing one, useful for moving a category around the hierarchy without recreating it.

### Subcategories

When the category has child categories, they are listed here. Drag and drop subcategories to change the order they appear in on the store.
